2. Franciscan Friary

The group of buildings that appear above Our Lady’s Cave was built between 1894 and 1908 under the direction of Fr Bernardo Doebbing.
In 1891, an encounter between the Bishop of Nepi and Sutri, Mgr G. Costantini, who was seeking a religious community for the stable custody of the Shrine, and the two Franciscan Fathers G. Janknecht and B. Doebbing, ended with an understanding that was convalidated with a Rescript of Leo XIII.
In 1892 Fr Doebbing was given the task of improving the Shrine and building the Small Convent (above the Rodio stairs), the first dwelling for the Community. Subsequently the Convent and its complex were built.
